Bangkok Risks Being Under Water in 15 Years

Flooding in BangkokThe Chairman of Thailand’s Disaster Prevention Centre, Dr. Smith Dharmasaroja said in an interview this week that Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, faces inundation within 15 years as it sinks further below sea level in the Gulf of Thailand and rains and high tides burst the banks of its waterways. Bangkok, once known as the “Venice of the East”, has filled in most waterways to create roads for its 10 million population, and this year the Chaophraya River burst its banks and dykes, inundating residential areas and destroying crops in surrounding areas. Information regarding the work of the Royal Irrigation Department to overcome this problem can be accessed by clicking here.
