National Hazard Mapping Programme for the Philippines

Typhoon durianManila: President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has instructed the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to produce a national hazard mapping programme for use in warning communities and local governments about potential natural disasters. Arroyo said that the national hazard mapping programme would forewarn vulnerable communities and help increase the capability of local governments to prepare for calamities including typhoons, mudflows and oil spills. “The death and destruction in the wake of calamities can be minimised by organised and systematic human intervention. We must not leave things to fatal luck when we can develop the tools to prevent harm” she said.
